hub motor electric conversion kit failure

Firstly, thank you for sending the hub motor with rear light so promptly – it arrived within a couple of days of your email and is installed and works perfectly.

Unfortunately there are some problems:

1) There were no instructions that I could find for connection of the electric bike battery level wire – the green one – so I am unable to tell what the battery levels are.

2) The light switch (brown and yellow leads) did not work on either the thumb control or the twist control (I use the thumb throttle control on the bicycle). I wired the lights directly to the electric bike battery leads with a switch and this works fine.

THE BIG PROBLEM.

I received electric conversion kit and installed the hub motor, motor controller, electric bike battery and the other parts on my bicycle about 10 days ago. I ride about 30km to work and back again in the evening and electric conversion kit has been performing very well. The route is quite hilly in places and the hub motor struggles a bit up the hills so I always apply some pedal assist in this situation. A couple of times towards the end of last week and again this morning when I have been applying the brakes on a steep downhill, there have been about 4 sounds from the horn and the motor has cut out. The first couple of times I switched off the power then back on again and the motor started again. This evening it occurred again and no amount of switching the power on and off would restore the motor to action. Instead each time, the horn sounded about 4 times, then stopped.

I started to ride with everything turned off but I noticed that the electric bike motor wheel felt rough and resistant to rotating. The electric bike motor wheel does not turn freely at all now. It feels as though the motor has seized.

I was relying on the bicycle with electric bike motor to get me to work so it is quite a problem.

I am happy to ship the hub motor back to you but not by air as it is too expensive. I was reading on the leafmotor’s forum that the HBL hub motor is better for hills. I would have bought this but it is not yet available for 20 inch wheels. If my hub motor is in fact unrepairable, I would like to have its replacement exchanged with the hbl hub motor for the 20 inch wheel – I am happy to pay the difference between the cost of a replacement for my hub motor and the hbl hub motor when it is available.

From above case,we are sure the bldc motor controller was broken that because of over-current brought high temperature and broke the MOSFET.
So your hub motor electric conversion kit can’t work.

Hub motor was very sluggish

Question:While trying to get the hub motor up and running here we have run in to some problems. After installing the hub motor wheel in the fork it was very sluggish to turn and took quite a bit of effort, not freewheeling at all. The first time we plugged the battery (fully charged 48V 12AH LiFePo4 at 52.9V) in to hub motor (without the throttle connected to the controller cable) the hub motor beeped three times. When we hooked up the controller cable black and yellow pin connectors to the corresponding ones on the throttle there was no response from the electric bike motor, but the battery level lights did light up. We tried both throttles sent with the same results.

As it was the weekend I went to the forum and looked there for assistance. I received some good feedback that the 3 beeps we heard were a signal that the throttle was not work which is what we found as soon as we hooked up the throttle. We have checked all the leads for correct amperage as per his instructions with positive results.

I am assuming that electric bike kit is bench tested before it leave there? The packaging was undamaged upon delivery and all seemed in good order upon receipt. If you could please advise us on what to do to get this resolved we would appreciate it as we want to get on with our trials here to be able to get out product to market by summer.

I have checked my throttle and hub motor controller wires against your PDF diagram and there seems to be some discrepancy? I wish my camera was working but I will describe my findings. Diagram Throttle Black 3 pin shows: Red? perhaps Orange?/White/Blue Our Throttle Black 3 pin has:
Orange/White/Black from core with black jump to yellow 2 pin Diagram Controller Black 3 pin has: Red? perhaps Orange?/black/Yellow Hub Motor Controller Black 3 pin has: Rust from Core with Red Jumper to PAS White three pin/White/Black from core with Black jumper to yellow 2 pin

I checked the 8 pin connector again and can’t see that it isn’t making good contact. No bent pins or obstructions.Electric Bike Motor still beeps three times upon connecting to full battery as described with and without full connections of cables.

Yes jumping the two holes as indicated does make the electric bike kit run. It seemed like at first that by moving the controller wire that the electric bike motor would stop and start as if there was a short right at the junction and we thought that might be the problem. We hooked up the cable but I still am not getting any response from either throttle when hooked up to the black two pin connector even if I move the cable at the junction and now using the jumper the short method that issues seems to have gone away?

We are trying hard to make this electric bike kit work here but I have to admit we are getting a bit frustrated. The throttle cable while hooked up shows 5.0 amps on the red wire and from .8 amps at rest and 3.8 amps on the white wire when at full throttle like it should? Without the black pin connector together there are 5.0 amps at the red wire and .1 amps at the white wire if that is any useful information.

Problem with electric bike hub motor kit

Good day.I have bought from you 1 set of 48V 1000W rear electric bike kit that includes 48V 12Ah li battery,48v lcd brushless motor controller, twist throttle, brake levers with 26″ 1000w hub motor rear wheel.Received all things. The order number lf283218U578679K. Shipment was fast and packing box was not broken.

But since I had installed hub motor wheel, motor controller,throttle..everything, I had following problems: Twist throttle was sometimes hard to begin electric bike motor uphill, with even slightest elevation.Electric bike kit either stops unintentionally, while I begin to accelerate hub motor, or doesn’t start at all. Usually it takes several amperes to start throttling.Electric bike motor never gets hot, only a little bit warm.

Electric bike kit (regenerative) brakes almost didn’t work at all. It is possible to stop with them only from the lowest speed of 5km/h approximately. If the speed is more than this, brakes just let the hub motor to freewheel. I don’t know if they are converting electrical energy.

When I tried to use USB cable to see, if it is because of lcd hub motor controller settings, I couldn’t connect to it. Software starts, when I choose “Connect” nothing happens with the program itself, only the electric bike motor starts to beep constantly. “Get settings” didn’t load any, changing parameters and saving them seems to have no effect on the electric bike motor. Only “Disconnect” button worked, but somehow it says that “Get settings” is complete, and any changes in parameters reset to their initial state. After approximately 360km, “Cruise control” button stopped to work. I opened hub motor and checked electrical connection to the motor controller itself, the button itself and wires are functioning properly. But I have absolutely no voltage reading on the button’s wires.

Read article from blog and forum,I doubt the problem comes from electric bike battery. It as said, there is a BMS inside lithium battery. Some cells would be dead because of overcharge or over discharge. If dead, can’t charge lithium battery.Even if charge it,green led on charger will light at once.It looks like full charge, actually no any electrical energy inside battery. So when I ride my hub motor electric bike, the electric bike motor will stop in short time.

Please, help me to resolve those electric bike kit problems, especially, with “Cruise control” button.

make a 48V hub motor electric bike kit work at 36V

I have recently bought a DIY electric bike kit from you, where I have bought a 36V battery and a 48V hub motor & brushless motor controller. I thought that when I ordered from your online internet shop, you would check, that the electric bike kit system would work..

On the homepage you write, that I can force the 48V hub motor controller to work with lower voltages. Also, the 48V thumb hub motor controller does not work. The twist controller works.

I have called your office and found out, that the problem is, that the 48V hub motor controller cuts off the electric bike kit system to protect the li battery. And the only solution is to manually override the system, but that is not an ideal way to operate the e-bike.

I have now ordered a new hub motor controller and thumb throttle for 36V from your homepage. What I would like you to do, is to write on the package you send me, that the package you send me is a guarantee replacement.

I do not wish to discuss guarantee and other issues with you, it is much easier for me to order new parts, but I would like to avoid to have to pay customs and VAT again for the same things. Also it takes weeks before the goods get through customs.

I also have one more suggestion for improvement:Please put 2*2 nuts on the electric bike motor wheel to be able to secure them, because my front 48V 1000w electric bike motor wheel fell off while I was starting with the e-bike. (while driven by 36V, ½ power – where I pull the break lever, push the cruise control 5 times, and use the cruise control to operate the electric bike motor) Also it would be nice if you could specify how hard I should tighten the nuts on the electric bike motor wheel.

20Nm? 60Nm?, I would like to tighten them well, but I do not wish to brake the thread. My transaction ID of electric bike kit order is 3FA78294KK410865B

power on the electric bike hub motor was gone

Electric bike hub motor kit was gone, how to solve it?

Received my electric bike kit .Product list:
1.26″ 36V 250W front brushless geared hub motor wheel
2.36V 6-MOSFET brushless motor controller working with LCD(display speed, mileage, battery gauge..)
3.standard black twist throttle with battery gauge
4.brake lever with low voltage to brake
5.three button-ON/OFF switches that are used for control front&rear lights, cruise, horn…

Check rim whether in the middle of fork and the direction of hub motor runs. Then I have installed everything on my bicycle according as instruction manual and the electric bike kit worked fine.

I was running e-bike about 25km and then I stopped the electric bike motor . Charged the electric bike battery because I was staying there for some hours. Started on the way home and after some heavy hills (about 3 km)it was completely dead. The electric bike kit system was running like normal up to this, but suddenly all power on the electric bike motor wheel was gone.

Those three led lights on twist throttle for electric bike battery were still lit. I tried to turn e-bike off and on again, but same result. Today the electric bike kit is still dead.

Do you have any idea? Measured 0,1 Ohm between the electric bike motor(hub motor phase wire: yellow, green, blue).Infinity between hub motor cable and hub motor cover. So it does not look like it is burned. The electric bike motor controller has 41,8 Volt input.

Measure the hub motor hall sensor:
Red, black, yellow, blue, green wires.
1.The voltage between red and black is 4.5V;
2.The voltage between yellow and black is 4.2V or 0V,(When use hand to turn hub motor, the voltage will change from 0~4.5V~0~4.5V)
3.The voltage between blue and black is 0.2V; (When use hand to turn hub motor, the voltage could not change)
4.The voltage between green and black is 0.1V. (When use hand to turn hub motor, the voltage could not change)

From above test data, I doubt there were two hall sensor inside the electric bike motor that were broken.

The issue about 250W hub motor electric bike kit

Bought 1 set of electric bike kit from one supplier in China two months ago. Sent more than 10 emails, haven’t gotten any reply. I met below issue, hope solve it.

When I was riding my electric bike three weeks ago, the 250w mini front hub motor suddenly started to make a strange and strong noise. If I try to turn the twist throttle on when the e-bike doesn’t have any load, I keep the hub motor wheel in the air. The electric bike motor works fine and electric bike kit does not make any noise.

However, if I try riding my electric bike and turning the throttle on, the electric bike motor starts making a strong and continuous noise. I tried to riding my bike keeping the brakes continuously pressed and any noise appears so it seems to be some electric problem. It is very strange and I am so much worried.

I took off electric bike kit wheel and used screwdriver to disconnect six screw nuts, took apart hub motor cover and found there was a rotor-winding, two bearings, three sets of 42-gear, 1 set of 21-gear on the axis, 1 set of 81-gear on the hub. There wasn’t any impurity inside the hub motor. Re-install and test electric bike motor wheel, still have the same problem. Don’t know what’s the problem.

Contact my supplier many times and can’t get any reply. I looked for answers by google, yahoo and bike forums, still can’t find the correct answer. Yesterday I got a message from my US friend about there was a company, leaf motor can help me. So I sent an email to leaf motor.

Surprisingly just half an hour past, leafmotor replied me and asked me to check the bearings. How to check hub motor bearing? Take off two bearings from axis, and use little finger to hold inside of bearing, the other hand to turn bearing, faster, better. If you can hear some noise from bearing that can confirm the problem comes from electric bike motor ‘s bearing. At last, I found there was a bearing was broken. According as the bearing model, I bought two new ones in market and replaced them.

Test electric bike kit wheel in the air, no noise. Brake hub motor wheel, still no noise. Nice, Have solved it.

I should thank leaf motor that help me and I found fun through repairing electric bike motor. Now I decide to buy leaf ‘s electric bike kit if I have need and will recommend my friends to order leafmotor’s electric bike motor, bike kit…

Though I haven’t ordered any goods from leafmotor by now. But they are very professional, has best service and believe they have high quality products.

more detail about hub motor

These days more and more hub motors are used for ebikes. We also call them electric bike motors. For e bike motor,it’s an important key product. It seems bike engine.

We know gasoline engine. The internal combustion engine is an engine in which the combustion of a fuel (normally a fossil fuel) occurs with an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber. In an internal combustion engine, the expansion of the high-temperature and high -pressure gases produced by combustion apply direct force to some component of the engine. This force is applied typically to pistons, turbine blades, or a nozzle. This force moves the component over a distance, transforming chemical energy into useful mechanical energy.

Gasoline engine will let co2, so2 pollute environment and be bad for health.

For electric bike motor,it uses battery, one kind of clean energy.
Hub motor is make up of rotor winding, magnet, hub, axis, bearing, hall sensor…

Hub motor electromagnetic fields are supplied to the stationary windings of the motor. The outer part of the motor follows, or tries to follow, those fields, turning the attached wheel.

About motor speed,power..we can customize it according as customers’ actual need by change gauge of the coil wires and/or the turns number of the coils and/or the height of magnet

There are some parts of hub motor.

26 inch 36V 250W rear hub motor electric bike kit

Q:Does Item Number:LBCK263250R hub motor kit have throttle only option? Also does it have motor cutoff brake sensors?

A:This Item hub motor kit works with throttle or pedal assist or both of them.
Come with brake lever with cut off function. But not come with cut off brake sensors.
We have brake sensors on our site.
https://www.leafbike.com/products/electric-bike-parts/hydraulic-mechanical-brake-cut-off-sensor-switch-cable-1213.html

Q:What’s the difference with brake levers with cut off function verse brake cut off sensor?

A:The same.
If you don’t use our brake lever, prefer yourself brake lever, can install this cut off sensor.
If use our brake lever, don’t use this cut off sensor.

Q:Okay.I understood thank you
I’m thinking about the rear 250w hub motor or the rear 350w hub motor.
I like the smaller display that the 250 has. If I get the 350 watt bike motor kit can I ask for the smaller display that comes with the 250?
Also I have a 7 speed cassette will both these motors work?

A:Yes. We have smaller LCD that can work this 250w or 350w controller. For example: LCD-07U, LCD-005 or LCD-004
Can make cassette version motor. But, should tell us after paid. (Default: fit for 7 speed freewheel sprocket)

Q:Can you help me further?
I have a Electra townie bike.
The tires are 26 inch with cruiser size tires(not fat tire) but they are the 2.125 size. My bike also has linear pull brakes, not disc brakes.
The 350 and 250 watt hub motors all sit tires sizes too small and I don’t see any that accept rim brakes
I want to add a 250 or 350 watt rear hub motor to this bike.

A:When you order, leave message: 26 x 2.125 tire.
Then we use the other 26 inch rim
https://www.leafbike.com/products/electric-bike-parts/26-inch-e-bike-rim-1094.html
All of our rims can accept rim brakes.

Q:What I am clear on is that you have bike motor kits for rim brakes. You have kits for my tire size. Thank you for answering those. I do have free wheel and its shifted with a 7 speed cassette

My remaining questions are:
1. I need a freewheel with a seven speed or a freewheel that can accept my cogs.from my existing wheel. Do I just state this in the comments?
2. I am trying to decide between the 350w and 250w rear bike motor kit. LBCK2636350RG and LBCK2636250R.
3. Does the 250w hub motor kit also have pedal assist?
4. Does the 250w hub motor kit also have the cruise control feature?
5. Do they use the same controller?
6. I like the display on the 250w bike motor kit. If I get that with the 350w bike motor kit will i lose any features?
7. Can i have a thumb throttle instead of the twist throttle?

A:1. This hub motor kit can work with standard size 7 speed freewheel or 1 speed cog.
3. both have pedal assist function
4. both have cruise control
5. Different controller
6. 350w also have that display. (Just tell us what kind of LCD)
7. Yes, can use thumb throttle. We can ship thumb throttle.

The hub motor works very well but with E7

Q: I connected hub motor to the controller and everything up correctly and the display powers on perfectly well but when I turn the throttle on nothing happens with bike motor. Is there a necessary configuration?

A: First connect hub motor.Controller will check Hall sensor.Display E7. If connect wires well. E7 will be off. If always display E7. Bike motor works in no Hall status. Just check White big plug with red,black,green,blue,yellow..(Hub MOTOR SENSOR PLUG)If one wire is not connected well.Always display E7. Check if pin inside white big plug was bent?

Q: I checked the pins in that sensor plug, they all seem to be perfectly fine. The hub motor has not worked since I got it even if the hall plug is unplugged. Is there a change in settings for sensor less?

A: There are two brown wires from controller. Remove black tape on two brown wires. Don’t turn throttle. Plug these connectors together. Controller can look for correct working way. .Plug them.If bike motor Not work,Disconnect them. Then re-plug until work correctly. Then disconnect them.Turn throttle

Q: Cool I will try, should I turn the bike off before I connect the wires or should I do this while it is on? Will connecting those wires spin the motor?

A: If plug these two connectors, also can’t solve it. Controller always remembers this E7 is correct working way. Do it as below: 1.Disconnect/remove your battery power plug 2.controller’ red and black wires touch together for 1 second.Let controller to be default Then re-connect your battery to controller.(If wires are connected well).Must solve it.

Q: When I connected the pedal assist it works perfectly, so it must be the throttle, could you verify for me that this is the correct wire orientation?

bike hub motor speed

Q:Just a quick question. What is the tooth count on the freewheel sprocket?
A:16T or 18T
Q:Do you know which one? I may want to change it to a different tooth count.
A:Please click below site. This kind of single cog. (If you told us before shipment. We can put this one in parcel for free.
Q:I still wasn’t sure what front chain wheel to rear cog combination would work best with this motor. I can get the cogs here easily. The hub motor arrives today. Well done as always! Hey, I need the Kv for the motor in RPM/V and the number of pole pairs for my controller.
A:about 19 rpm/ V, 46 pcs magnets (23 pair)
Q: I am finally setting up the new bike motor. I assume the 750w is a 48v based version so the rpm if we use the provided figure kV figure of 19 rpm/V is around 912 rpm. Am I correct? And what is the max phase current on the motor?
A:We didn’t test this hub motor on machine. We worry load it that will break this bike motor.
So don’t know max current.
max phase current is about = 1/3 of max current.
Q:Thank you for explaining max phase current but can you approximate what your other similar hub motors had for a max current and then I can approximate from there. I need it to complete setting up the controller.
For example, what is the 4T 750w 48v max current or what is the 1000w 48v 4T max current, etc. From there we can get pretty close to what it is.
I am doing lots of diagnostics and see that my bike motor is maxing out at around 731 rpm. Why am I not getting 912 rpm?I am getting a max rpm of 763. I am using a 52v battery.
A:For example: 1500w 4T no load speed is about 610rpm @48v works with square controller
1000w 4T no load speed is about 720rpm @48v works with square controller
I think your 4T hub motor max about 830rpm no load speed works with square controller
If works with sine wave controller, 10% slower than square controller, about 747rpm no load speed.
