Hub motor for electric bike

Hub motor is an electric motor that is an important part for electric bike.A common bicycle with a motorized wheel(hub motor) is an electric bicycle.

1.According as your size of rim,it has 6″ 8″ 10″ 12″ 14″ 16″ 18″ casting hub motors and 20″ 24″ 26″ 700c and 28″ electric bike hub motors
From 6″ to 18″,the rims are much smaller,so always casting hub.And used for electric scooters, electric tricycles, sometimes also used for folding electric bicycles.
From 20″ to 28″,because of rims are much bigger, always use spokes to fit.And used for electric bicycles.

2.According as whether has “brush”,it has two types:brushless hub motor and brushed hub motor
Brushless hub motor is make up of aluminium hub, aluminium covers, axis, bearings, copper winding, rotor, hall sensor..
Brushed hub motor is make up of aluminium hub, aluminium covers, axis, bearings, gear box(several gears inside),printed copper slice, two pcs of brushes..

The brushless hub motor’s principle:electromagnetic fields are supplied to the stationary copper windings of the motor. The hub(outer part of the motor)follows, turning the attached wheel.

The brushed hub motor’s principle:energy is transferred by brushes contacting the rotating shaft of the motor that drive gears, then drive hub.

With the advantage of brushless hub motor,it used for electric bike widely.

According as use,it also called electric bike hub motor.
According as current,it has ac and dc hub motor. But nearly all of hub motors are direct current(DC).

electric hub motor for e-motorcycle

Motorcycle is fast,exciting.

Traditional motorcycles use gasoline and newer versions like the run on electricity. When start, should swap shift from NO.1 to NO.5.It takes more than 10s to reach 80m/h and makes a lot of noise.
Use leafmotor’s blw-16b electric hub motor.Reach 80m/h,it just take 5s without any noise.

This hub motor is make up of aluminium hub, cover, magnet, rotor, winding, axis etc.The net weight is about 13.5kg,use 16×2.5″tyre,load approximate 500lb.Motor speed,we can customize according as your actually need.

Gasoline engine need to replace machine oil termly, but this electric hub motor doesn’t need to service.

Calculate cost as 30 miles per day
1.Replace machine oil each month,12 times per year. The price for each bottle of machine oil is $20USD. 30 miles per day use 0.5 gallon,it costs $2USD/day.Total price:$970USD/year,$1940USD/two years.
2.Use electric motorcycle,charge battery everyday cost $0.2USD/per day.Total price:$73USD/year,$146USD/two year.

Two years later,replace 1 pcs of new 48V or 72V lead-acid battery,it costs less than $500USD.
Choose electric hub motor for your motorcycle,it save $647USD/per year.

In order to have a good environment, please ride e-motorcycle.

Electric bike kit does not work

Q:Received electric bike kit and assembled it according to the instructions, but nothing happens as turn the key and press the throttle. No sound, no movement. Every cable is connected as it should be. Tested the battery with a multimeter,it’s okay.
A:If the battery is no problem. Please test it as below:
1.Disconnect all external wires from brushless controller,except battery power wires and motor wires(blue,yellow and green three thick wires) and hall sensor wires(red,black,blue,yellow and green five thin wires);
2.Make your hub motor wheel in the air;
3.Find a three-pin throttle connector from motor controller, there are red, black and green three wires.Use a wire to jump red and green wires.

If your electric motor and controller are okay,it can run as the fastest speed suddenly.
If not,use your hand to turn your motor,be careful.Motor may run.
If work, problem may come from throttle wire connecting.

Solve:Check throttle connector and wire connecting.

Q:If still can’t work.
A:Should use voltmeter to test motor hall sensor(five wires):
1.The voltage of red and black wires is approximate 4.5V
2.The voltage of blue and black wires is approximate 4.5V or 0V(use hand to turn motor,it will change from 4.5V-0V)
3.The voltage of yellow and black wires is approximate 0V or 4.5V(use hand to turn motor,it will change from 0V-4.5V)
4.The voltage of green and black wires is approximate 4.5V or 0V(use hand to turn motor,it will change from 4.5V-0V)

If can’t get voltage from these wires, controller may broken or motor hall sensor is broken.

14″ e-bike stopped and waited for a moment

Q:Ride ebike on the flat road,no problem, but when I climb the hill,it will stop and wait for a moment,it still can re-start and have the same problem at once.

A:The temp inside the controller is too high and in order to protect this controller, should wait for a moment until the temp is lower than protective temp.

Solve:Use more MOS-FET brushless controller.

Now our 48V brushless motor controller has 15-MOSFET.More MOSFET afford temp and the temp rise very slow.It can solve this problem.

In market, always use 9-MOSFET to drive 48V 1000W hub motor. This kind of brushless controller is easy to be broken because of high temp will break MOSFET.

36V 750W / 48V 1000W 14″ brushless gearless hub motor is make up of aluminium hub,aluminium cover,magnet,rotor,winding,axis etc.Mounted 14×2 1/4~2 1/2″tyre,load approximate 300lb.Motor speed,we can customize according as your actually need.

Strange noise from hub motor

Q: The hub motor makes a noise once every turn and it gets stuck (or at least much more friction) at the same angle. It feels like it could be some magnetic effect but more likely it´s some mechanical contact that´s disturbing the rotation.

A: The noise comes from some metal impurity on the magnet.

Solve: Disconnect hub and remove it

Other answer 1.
Take rotor out of the magnet hub isn’t easy.Be careful your hands.Need two guys to do this. One guy press the hub,the other draws the rotor.

Other answer 2.
No other way to solve it,except disconnect hub motor.
Do it as the instruction.Be careful.

Other answer 3.
Magnet is easy to magnetize metal matter.Assembly hub motors should have a clean work environment.

Other answer 4.
There is no any room between rotor and magnet.See picture.Metal scrap may be inside the winding.Test motor before shipment,I think can’t find this problem. But after long distance to ship,it will be magnetized by magnet.

Other answer 5.
Small problem,it’s easy to repair.I disconnected two hub motors, one is old motor, the other is new one,and exchanged the rotor to different hub. That changed motor’s performance. Interesting job.I think you will like to repair it.

How to disconnect hub motor?
Disconnect it as below:

Received DIY kit does not work

I received your DIY electric bike kit about three weeks ago. 750W 36V with brushless controller. I have assembled it according to the instructions on your site, but one issue have arisen.Nothing happens as I turn the key and press the throttle. No sound, no movement. Every cable is connected as it should be. I’ve tested the battery with a multimeter, and the output is 36V, so there is nothing wrong there. I also tried connecting just the battery and the controller with no results.
I have tested the connection to the controller from the battery, and the multimeter reads 36V. The cables have been checked for bad connections,so I would think that the controller is faulty.

Answer 1:
The same problem to mine.At last I solve it.The problem comes from the wrong connecting.

Answer 2:
Remove all wires, except throttle and power wires.Twist your throttle,if still not run, please check the voltage from throttle.
The voltage of green and black wires is about 2.3V;
The voltage of red and black wires is about 4.5V.
If no any voltage from this throttle, check battery. If do have voltage input the controller, but no output from throttle. This controller may broken.Re-check wire connecting whether handle brake is hold off.

Answer 3:
Yeah,do it as Joe Horn said.
BTW,if your e bike kit is brushed, not brushless.
It’s easy.Connect two wires from your motor to the battery directly, the motor will run as the fastest speed at once.

Answer 4:
If the battery is no problem. Please test it as below:
1.Disconnect all external wires from brushless controller,except battery power wires and motor wires(blue,yellow and green three thick wires) and hall sensor wires(red,black,blue,yellow and green five thin wires);

If can’t get voltage from these wires, controller may broken or motor hall sensor is broken.

Answer 5:
Re-check wire connecting and connectors, most of problems come from wrong wire connecting and loose connectors.
One in a thousand products’ fault.Any goods should test more than 2 times before we received.

Answer 6:
Thanks, all.I found the problem. The three pin male and female connectors can’t connect well.Re-made these two connectors, motor worked well without any noise.Perfect.

Answer 7:
Before ride your bike on road, had better to fix these connectors firm,if not, sometimes your e-bike will stop sudden when everything works well.

Answer 8:
I met this problem before, bike conversion kit can’t work, but shook cable, the system run as the fast speed.

Answer 9:
I re-made all connectors since received my first e bike kit.And connected all wires as leafmotor instruction,no any installation trouble.

Request of info about your hub motors

Q:I’m planning to start a small production of electric vehicles and I’m evaluating your products.
I would like you to clarify the following details:
1) I read the performance data of HBL motor 24V/300W-36V/750W-48V/1000W, are these data referring to the same physical motor ?
2) What are the physical differencies between HBL-36F1 / HBL-36F2 / HBL-48F ? I noticed that the weight is the same, is the gauge of the coil wires and/or the turns number of the coils different for each motor ?
3) Are HBL motors equipped with internal position sensors ?
4) Besides 14/16/18″ can you supply also 20″ aluminium casted rims for HBL motors ?

A:Thank you for you are interested in our electric bike motor. You are very professional.
About the first and the second question, you are right, these performance datas come from the same motor. No difference.
About the third question,HBL is brushless gearless motor with internal hall sensor.
About the fourth question,in past we had this 20″ aluminium casted rims for HBL motors.
Now no body use this 20″ hub motor,so we don’t manufacture this kind of motor.
HBL-36F1/HBL-F2/HBL-48F these three kinds of motor,if they have differences that come from the gauge of the coil wires and/or the turns number of the coils.

BTW,if you hope get other performance about this hub motor, for example:faster, slower, more power at the highest efficiency point. We can customize according as your order.

No differences between hub motor and electric bike motor

Q:You wrote me that there are no differences between HBL-36F1/HBL-F2/HBL-48F hub motor, so the different prices listed on your website are just for commercial reasons ?
I’m glad to hear you can supply customized products, is this possible even for small numbers ? (We are starting this type of business and at the beginning we will need just a few pieces).
I really appreciate your hub motors mainly for the technical
specifications provided rarely present for this type of product.
I would be interested in testing the following electric bike motor:
– HBM-Rear (diam.=145mm)
– HBL-Rear (diam.=243mm)
(No rims, no spokes, no custom products at this time)
However I would like to know if disc brakes can be mounted on these
motors and, as I have to make some particular tests, if you can supply both motors with a 12 (or 14) tooth fixed sprocket mounted on (I mean just a single fixed sprocket, not the classic freewheel gear).
A:Our HBM-Rear and HBL-Rear can both be installed disc brake and freewheel are fit for standard 135mm rear fork.
Please review picture”Disk-6in”.Does your Disk brake with this threaded adapter? If have, your disc brake can mounted on our motor.
If you this disc brake doesn’t have this threaded adapter,we will offer you this part.
