looking an electric bike controller for 48V 1000W hub motor

I am using a brushless and gearless DC hub motor that is 48V 1000W. I am looking for a suitable bike motor controller for my project.

I want to implement regen braking, cruise, reverse, setting a speed limit etc.
Will this 48V 500W controller works for this 1000W motor?

I am quite hesitant to choose the 48V 1000W brushless motor controller displayed in the web here as I am afraid that the high power may drain too much power from the battery.

I am using a 48V 10Ah battery. It should be sufficient to power the 1000W BLDC hub motor but to power both the motor and controller, it may overstrain the battery.

Can you confirm that your brushless motor controller can set max speed limit, regen brake, reverse and cruise control?
Basically, I just need to buy the three button switch and every of the button can be used to perform on/off operation such as horn, lights, cruise, regen brake etc right?
What is the default max speed limit in the brushless motor controller? Do you change and set the max speed from the LCD display, controller or both? After I set the max speed and I do not want the max speed to be change, is it possible?
The hub motor can still work with the brushless motor controller, even with or without the LCD screen right?

Do you have a similar brushless and gearless hub motor like the one that is:

1) 14″ inch – 16″ inch (including solid rubber tyre)
2) Power is at least 750 W to 1000W max
3) Can implement regen brake, cruise, reverse, set max speed limit

If you have, can I have some details for these hub motors? I need them work with LCD brushless motor controller.

How-to-build-a-hub-electric-bike-motor

These days hub electric bike motor wheels are used for e-bikes widely. Nearly all of hub bike motor are brushless gearless. Because of low noise, high efficiency, long life are popular with riders.
Order 1 set 12″ 14″ 16″ 18″ 20″ 24″ 26″ 700c 27.5″ 650b 27″ 28″ and 29 inch hub motor kit, convert your common bike to e-bike is so easy. Directly front or rear drive your bike.
The important part is an engine -hub motor. How to build this electric bike motor?

Step 1: winding
Calculate motor power, speed RPM and confirm what type of copper wire would you use. Next is fix a rotor on the steel shelf, wind copper wires by handwork or machine. It takes about 1 hour to done it by handwork. And should use rubberized fabric to wrap your fingers. Nipping copper wires will break your fingers. If you need steel parts for your building process, then make sure you use the.

Step 2:soak paint
After winding should soak paint in order to be insulated. Use brush to put the insulated paint on the winding and make sure be soaked everywhere. It takes about 24 hours.

Step 3:press axis into rotor
Put axis into rotor winding and use a key to fix axis. Use A-B glue to paste three hall sensors on hub motor rotor, put 9-pin (three pin/each hall) into PCB and use insulated wire to fix it. Put 8-pin cable inside the axis and heavy yellow, blue, green wires to connect the three copper wires(Phase A,B,C) separately. Thin red, black wires are be weld to PCB + and – .

Step 4:paste magnet
Paste magnet inside hub, one N pole, next S pole ..one by one. More magnet, higher torque, more power. The height of our magnet is 30mm,6mm higher than other hub motor. In market,24mm high magnet only build max 500w electric bike motor. So our bike motor works at 36V can reach 750w.

Step 5:install rotor winding
Put the rotor winding inside the magnet hub, be careful hand. It has powerful magnetism.

Step 6:install two covers
Before installing both covers, we should press bearing into cover. Use hexagon wrench to tight screw nuts. When you hear “poop” from electric bike motor. That means install correctly. Done it.

Power on battery and use bike motor controller to drive this hub motor. If no any strange noise. It’s okay. You also need to make sure you have a controller that fits with the model you are working with, or else the whole thing might just fall apart.

Check your hub motor wheel – electric bike kit

Order 1 set of electric bike kit from manufacturer-leaf motor and convert your bike to e-bike is a fun. But sometimes when we receive packages and don’t know how to handle it. Follow us:

Before install electric bike kit, we should test it first.
Step 1: Deliver your package
Spent some days on Internet, at last found leaf motor ‘s electric bike kit is the best. Ordered it and paid by paypal. Waiting for… About 3 days later, post officer knocked my door (EMS) and sign in it.
Check packing box first ,if it’s okay. Pls disconnect electric bike kit box.

Step 2: Check all goods in package
Take out 26″ hub motor rear wheel, bldc motor controller, lcd, throttle, brake lever, three button switches, speed signal wire and some connectors from packing box. Check each goods and make sure everything doesn’t have fault.

Step 3: hold on 26″ hub motor wheel
Put the hub motor wheel on your frame fork and tight both screw nuts.

Step 4: install magnet detector

Step 5: connect wires
1.Plug male 6-pin hall wires from hub motor cable to female connector from bldc motor controller;
2.Connect heavy yellow, green, blue from hub motor cable to heavy yellow, green, blue from bldc motor controller, color to color;
3.Two grey wires: connect these two wires/half speed; disconnect them/full speed;
4.Throttle connector is 3-pin that is easy to identify. Red: +4.5V, black: GND, green: Signal
5.Brake lever connector is white 2-pin.When hub motor is working, press brake lever is to cut off power;
6.Signal wire is black three pin plug that should be connected to white three pin female connector.
7.The other three pin connector from bldc motor controller is used for PAS;
8.Connect four pin lcd plug.

Make sure each wire is connected correctly. Power on battery.(Heavy red wire: +, black wire: – )Be careful,36V controller must work at 36V battery, if supply 48V DC, it will break the bldc motor controller at once.

Power on battery and press ON/OFF button on LCD one time, the LCD will light. Twist your throttle, hub motor starts to run. No strange noise…Press brake lever, electric bike kit system stops, loose it,the hub motor runs.

Please watch video .

By test electric bike kit system, we found hub motor wheel, bldc motor controller, throttle.. everything is good. Next step is that we start to convert them on bike.

BLDC hub motor bike conversion kit works

We test this bike conversion kit before shipment. If three led lights on throttle can’t work, please connect green wire to the positive of electric bike battery.

About anti-theft, you should disconnect two power wires (one red thin wire and one red thick wire).

Another red thin wire should be connected to a lock or a switch in series.

I find the problem and it’s was the thumb throttle who is not working… I changed the thumb throttle and replace it with the twist throttle and it work fine,,, but I am not satisfied because I prefer the thumb throttle so if I return you the thumb throttle would you send me a replacement one.

I got also another problem in the installation manual online you describe a procedure for anti-theft and I am not able to use it… What is a Cut off power to supply (called soft-switch is turning the key)

So please tell me if I mist something because the bike conversion kit system is not working.

Text for installation guide need clarification
6. Anti-theft alarm setting:
Cut off power supply to hub motor (called soft-switch, but hub bike motor controller is still powered
on) and take out the electric bike battery key, within 10 seconds press and hold the cruise
control button until you hear a beep sound, then release the cruise control button.
The bike conversion kit system is now protected from theft and the hub motor is electronically locked.
Any movement or vibration of bike conversion kit system will trigger the siren for 30 seconds, and the bike motor wheel will resist any pedaling movement.

Was this thin power wire connected well? If did no problem, are you sure that five hall wires from hub motor weren’t be connected well.

Could you try it as below :
Use your hand to turn your hub motor wheel, then turn your twist throttle, maybe do like that, it can turn.

It’s not working. Tell you what I done

Check all the connection three times also check with the diagram all wires and they are OK

Only thing I got: the horn is working and the gauge show full (3 lights) when I turn on the electric bike battery, also when I push two times the cruise button I get a loud beep from the horn and that’s all.

After a road test nothing at all it’s like having nothing at all…

I would like to order a rear 48v 1500w hub motor wheel

I really like (love) your hub motors (they perform really well and last a long time) and now I have the time to get the one I always needed.
And here is a very similar bike which also has a 1000W option rear hub motor this one has multiple speeds, most probably 7.
I have asked the rear dropout widths. Will get back to you as soon as I know. And I have a steel frame with a 145mm dropout now which I can widen. I do not 100% understand the trade offs that you are referring to when you say that the rim doesn’t matter, it is the 3 inch tire that is the issue for this hub motor as the same electric bike motor would also go into a wider dropout fat bike which also has an even wider tire – 4 inches. I need more details to understand it more clearly.
And there are other options at the front end of the chain where we can move the chain out a bit:

1. the little chain guide can help – this is mounted to the seat tube to push out the chain from the frame and tire
2. move bottom bracket out to the right
3. or get a bottom bracket with a longer spindle
4. or add spacers between the crank and chaining

What hub motor do you use for your 2000w and higher power fat bike applications? What would I need to change to make any motor work?

I see that the 2000w electric bike motor is 74mm wide which is only 4 mm wider than the 1500w hub motor. I have attached some new pics of my bike from different angles so that you can see how much clearance I have and if I just go with a single speed setup, I will have enough clearance for the chain but in case I need to get additional clearance, I do have some options mentioned previously. So my question now is would a wider or higher power motor work better? I see that the 1500w motor works with dropouts of between 135 and 155mm. And then the 2000w one begins at 170mm. I can widen my dropout and since I won’t be needing the space of a 7 speed cassette, I should be able to have the chain clearance I need.

replace 16 inch hub motor wheel

I have a electric scooter similar to this. The dimensions of the e-scooter are very suitable for driving around in city traffic but the hub motor is too whimpy. It is about 350 watts and I…well, shall we say that I weigh a bit more than the average Chinese person, and I often carry large boxes of things that really dog the bike down. I want to replace the present 48v motor with a 48v 1000w motor. I will be in the US next week, so I can pick it up then and bring it back. The wheel size is 16″. I want to be able to put disc brakes on the rear, as well as a sprocket to mount the chain on the left side. I also hope that I can mount 3″ tires on it. Do you have such a thing? Can you conversion kits be mounted on a 16″ rim? I also need a controller for the motor and hope to find one that regen capability, cruise control and reverse.

We recommend our 16 inch 48v 1000w rear hub motor kit.

The basic principles of the permanent magnet hub motor

We talk about one type of permanent magnet hub motor for electric bike. It’s a hub electric bike motor, sometimes we also call it brushless dc hub motor .

The permanent magnet hub motor and the hub motor driver is a typical product for e-bike recently.

Generally the electric bike motor ’s rotor winding is made of a three phase star connection, with the three-phase asynchronous AC hub motor is very similar. The hub motor rotor has been magnetized permanent magnet, in order to detect the polarity of the hub motor, there are three halls sensors on the rotor.

The hub motor driver is made by the power electronic devices and integrated circuits, its function is to receive electric bike motor ’s start, stop and brake signal so that control the hub motor to start, stop and brake; receive the position sensor signals and reversing signal, used to control the inverse power tube change the bridge off to produce a continuous torque; receive the speed command and speed feedback signal used to control and adjust the speed; provide protection and display

The main circuit is a typical voltage-type AC – DC – AC circuit, other pieces of alternating square wave frequency of 5-26KHZ modulation wave symmetry.

Permanent magnet NS alternating exchange, the position sensor phase difference of 120 ° U, V, W, square wave, combined with the six-state encoding signal forward / reverse signal generator: 101,100,110,010,011,001, through processing logic components to produce conduction of T1-T4, T1-T6 turns on, the T3-T6 conduction, T3-T2 turn-on, turn-T5-T2, T5,-T4 conduction, which means that the DC bus voltage is incremented A + B-, A + C-, B + C-, B + A-, C + A-, C + B-, so that the rotor turned a pair of NS pole, T1-T6 power tube fixed into six states followed by conduction. Each state, only two phase winding are energized in order to change a state, the axis of the magnetic field generated by the rotor winding 60 ° electrical angle of rotation in space, the rotor follows the rotor magnetic field rotation is equivalent to the space of 60 ° electrical angle position, the rotor in a new location so the position sensor U, V, W to produce a new set of coding according to the agreement, the new coding and changed the power tube combination of conduction, the magnetic field generated by the rotor winding shaft forward 60 ° electrical angle, and so on, permanent magnet electric bike motor produces continuous torque, drag the load for a continuous rotation. Permanent magnet DC motor commutation is itself, rather than forced by the commutation, also known as controlled synchronous hub motor.

How-to-build-a-freewheel-hub-motor-for-electric-bike-conversion-kit

These days 250w hub motor wheels are popular with European. Nearly all of hub bike motor are brushless geared. Because there are several gears inside hub. It has more powerful than 250w brushless geared motor.
Order 1 set 12″ 14″ 16″ 18″ 20″ 24″ 26″ 700c 27.5(650) 27″ 28″ 29 inch hub motor electric bike conversion kit , convert your common bike to e-bike is so easy. Directly front or rear drive your bike.
The important part is an engine -hub motor. How to build this? There are some differences with brushless freewheel hub motor.

Step 1: winding
Calculate motor power, speed RPM and confirm what type of copper wire would you use, wind copper wires by handwork or machine, each notch should be separated by insulating paper so that not shot circuit between the coil. It takes about 1 hour to done it by handwork. And should use rubberized fabric to wrap your fingers. Nipping copper wires will break your fingers.

Step 2: fix axis into motor
Put axis into rotor winding and use a key to fix axis. Use A-B glue to paste three hall sensors on hub motor rotor, put 9-pin (three pin/each hall) into PCB and use insulated wire to fix it. Put 8-pin cable inside the axis and heavy yellow, blue, green wires to connect the three copper wires(Phase A,B,C) separately. Thin red, black wires are be weld to PCB + and – .

Step 3:soak paint
After winding should soak paint in order to be insulated. Use brush to put the insulated paint on the winding and make sure be soaked everywhere. It takes about 24 hours.

Step 4:press gear into hub
Use presser to press steel 90-gear into hub. This hub with one side cover.

Step 5:fix three gears
Use retainer ring and key to fix three white nylon gears on one steel 21-gear.

Step 6:fix magnet
Fix magnet inside the hoops.

Step 7:install rotor winding into this magnet hoops.

Step 8:install there gears on the axis of this rotor winding and put inside of hub with 90-gears.

Step 9:install the other cover.
Use screw driver to tight screw nuts. Done it.

Power on battery and use bldc motor controller to drive this hub motor. If no any strange noise. It’s okay. Then according as the size of your bike to fit this geared spoke hub motor to 20″ 24″ 26″ 27.5″ 700c 27″ 28″ and 29 inch bike kit wheel.

looking for some hub motor

We are looking to source some hub motor for a US based e-scooter project.

This one is a prototype but we hope to be in limited production later this year or early next. Each scooter will use two hub motors.

The hub motor needs approximately the following peak spec’s:
Work Voltage:36-48V nominal
Motor Speed:500 rpm at nominal voltage
Power:700-1000W steady state
Full axle (i.e. mountable on both ends)
DC Brushed or Brushless Permanent Magnet
160mm max width

Several of your hub motors seem to be pretty close to this.

From your website:
HBl — turns ~300rpm at 36V. Extrapolating out from the speed constant,at 48V this winding would do about 400rpm. This might be okay but do you have a winding with a higher speed constant?

It looks like the HBL-16″ is the same hub motor with a rim already mounted. This would be of interest.

Please let me know if I can buy 2-4 of these, and how fast I could get them in the United States. Do you have a dealer that stocks them in the US or do you ship direct from China?

Answer:Our 48V 1000W hbl hub motor is fit for your order.Standard 26″ 48V 1000W hub motor wheel reaches 26.7m/h.If need faster speed hub motor. We can customise motor speed.

We suggest you choose 16″ 48V 1000W rear hub motor. It’s 135mm width and
fit for 135mm fork. There are two screw threats on each side cover that are used to install disk brake and 6-sprocket.We re-change the gauge of the coil wires and/or the turns number of the coils, the fastest speed can reach more than 700rpm.

About motor drawings, please visit or download from https://www.leafmotor.com
We can ship 2-4 sets of samples to you by EMS.It takes about 3-7 days to deliver.

Thanks for you are interested in our hub motor.
